Tax the bad reward the good!In city after city, those polluting or those not punishing the polluters are being punished. Mostly it is the courts that are driving this, but in a few cases, governments are seen doing the same. This is a welcome step, as India has been too lax on punishing those who pollute or rewarding those who don't.A nice solution would be to tax carbon-based fuels over and above the other taxes. This carbon or ‘sin’ tax will automatically incentivise both users and suppliers of energy to move to renewables and also use less of that energy. A subsidy on renewables may be good policy, but a tax on carbon-based fossil fuels is even better.-Laveesh Bhandari
